Views on Tourism on the sustainable tourism potential in Bangladesh

On the 15th of December 2009 I hosted a small group seminar in Dhaka, mainly for the Views On Tourism network members. The overall seminar topic was sustainable tourism potential in Bangladesh, which included the sub-topics of national tourism status, sustainable tourism potential, The Views On Tourism Project and discussion. The participants represented many different tourism related companies, sectors and organisations, which are all crucial to obtain a sustainable tourism development in Bangladesh. It was inspiring to gather these different players and hear their views.

My overall conclusion regarding this interesting topic is that the presence of tourism in any destination always brings with it environmental and socio-cultural as well as economic impacts. This is why tourism internationally is often praised as an effective development tool, especially in rural areas and the developing world. A sustainable tourism strategy will have a major positive impact in Bangladesh.

National tourism has much potential. But the sector is facing a huge number of obstacles and is still one of the countries in South Asia with the fewest arrivals and the lowest revenue earned from the tourism industry. Nevertheless, tourism has since the 1990s been a small but rapidly growing sector of Bangladesh economy. Fortunately the national tourism challenges is by far unique – so why not be inspired by the success and experience of others?

Portrait_small02I am convinced that a national sustainable tourism development based on knowledge and cooperation is the key to success for both individual tourism players and the society as a whole. To achieve this positive development will require a change of mind of many people as well as the involvement of multiple sectors; in fact it requires a national sustainable tourism movement of visionary people.

The main goal of the Views On Tourism Project is to join a national sustainable tourism movement by building capacity through knowledge and cooperation. Bangladesh can achieve great things if hands and brains are joined, including developing a sustainable tourism sector which will benefit the entire society. The main existing services of The Views On Tourism Project are this web-page and the free to join online network group also named ‘Views On Tourism’.

I hope to host more seminars in the future and the Views On Tourism group members will always receive direct notification on these events. Follow this link to read about the Views On Tourism network group Views On Tourism – Bangladeshi network and discussion and become a member here.
