What are the main factors that can affect a person to choose to spend their vacation in cox’sbazar….? Is it possible to have the statistical data of Bangladeshi people that spend in cox’sbazar?

  2. Majbritt Thomsen says

    Hi Samad.

Thanks for the specific question on Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh.
I am not sure if the exact question have been in focus in research, but two of the reports which mention Cox’s Bazar and the target market are:

Teknaf peninsula Community-Based Ecotourism Strategy (2009) IPAC
    and
Introduction to the tourism industry in Bangladesh (2008) Majbritt Thomsen for DANIDA B2B programme at the Royal Danish Embassy

Hopefully you can put some focus on this question and share the information here later.
    Good luck,

Is there any “nation branding” policy driven by the gvt ? Which are its determinants ?

  6. Majbritt Thomsen says

    Dear Hugo.

That is a good question, which I cannot answer but I expect there is.

If you find the answer please share it. You might want to ask the question in the Views On Tourism network group (read the page ‘be a member’). There is more than 500 members including people from the government.

    Hello Majbritt,
I wish I could “thank” you enough for your efforts! Being a foreigner, the way you are trying to market Bangladeshi tourism is really commendable.
    However, I am Asif, trying to teach Marketing to BBA students at United Int’l University, Dhaka. Some days ego I was thinking of writing an paper on Medical Tourism prospects and obstacles in BD. Could we share views and stats on that? my email id is {…..}
    Regards! ~ Asif.

  8. Majbritt Thomsen says

    Hi Asif
So nice to hear from you and thanks for the nice words on my Views On Tourism Project. I believe all people have resources that can make a positive impact in the local community and the entire world.
While living in Bangladesh from 2007-2010 the Views On Tourism project came to life through the support and input of so many wonderful people from the Bangladeshi tourism industry. The blog just started as my online knowledge bank on Bangladeshi tourism and best practice examples on sustainable tourism development. Through interaction with the Bangladeshi tourism stakeholders new questions to investigate kept turning up which made the numbers of blog articles boom. Later the idea of the Views On Tourism Network Group came up also inspired by the input from local stakeholders.
With more than 250.000 international blog visitors and 650 group members the Views On Tourism Project is now far more than a Bangladesh project. My point: the sky is the limit when people unite! I am so convinced that sharing knowledge and network can encourage a sustainable tourism movement in Bangladesh, South Asia and worldwide.
Asif, as a BBA teacher you also have an important role to play in this regard. Great idea writing an article on medical tourism in Bangladesh, but I am not the best person to ask for input. I did a few blog articles on medical tourism in general (search ‘medical’), but I do not know enough of the Bangladeshi angle of this topic. I can see you have already joined the Views On Tourism network group, please start a group discussion or contact the group member I have mentioned in my direct mail to you.
Best of luck and please keep me (and the group members) in the know on your article.

    Seminar on Tourism

Visit Beautiful Bangladesh (LinkedIn) group held its first seminar at the Press Club on December 21, 2012, titled “Prospects and Problems of Tourism Sector”.

Four papers were presented at the seminar.
IUB Prof Raguib Ahmed presented his paper titled ”The process & prospects of tourism in Bangladesh.” It was a power point presentation.
Advisor of Corporate Relations of Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy Foundation Mr Lutful Kabir (expatriate Bangladeshi) presented a paper on ‘how we can attract more foreign tourists’.
CEO of Institute of Hotel Management & Hospitality Rubina Husain Farouq dwelt on ”Industry Skills Council for Tourism & Hospitality” in her paper.
Young tour operator Hamidur Sami presented a paper about ” What Foreign Tourists said about Bangladesh–what they liked and disliked.”

Bangladesh Tourism Foundation chairman Mr Mokhlesur Rahman moderated the seminar.

Suggestions put forward in the papers presented at the seminar

    1. Developing eco-tourism.
    2. Revised role of Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation
    3. Revised Budget for Tourism sector
    4. Ensuring maximum security for tourists
    5. Improving hotel services
    6. Private sector’s involvement for promotion of tourism
    7. Tourist friendly procedures from Immigration and Home Ministry
    8. Role of Bangladesh Diplomatic missions
    9. Committees for joint collaboration of Parajatan, Home Ministry, Land, Public Works and Planning Commission

    1. Developing eco-tourism
Bangladesh has 2500 years old archaeological sites, 10,000 years old technology, villages, festivals and many more which can be sold as tourism products.
Hotels are being constructed in Cox’s Bazar just like slums. Eco-tourism has grown from the bad effects of tourism. But Bangladesh yet to develop eco-tourism and should follow the guidelines of International Eco-Tourism.
“Eco-tourism is a responsible tourism which can solve environmental problems,” Prof Raguib said in his paper.

    2. Revised role of Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation
Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (BPC) plays the role of catalyst.
BPC having the training infrastructure can be a leading capacity developer to involve youth in Hospitality , Tourism and Management.
BPC can play a coordination role in ensuring compliance of hospitality management.
BPC can be the key actor in revitalization of tourism involving key stakeholders.

    3. Revised Budget for Tourism sector
Budget for renovation of existing BPC hotels
Bangladesh Diplomatic missions should be sanctioned budgets for promoting tourism by fairs and advertising.
Revised Budget for capacity building Institute.
    Revision of compensation package.

    4. Ensuring maximum security for tourists
Security measures of a country can convince the foreign tourists to visit that country as they never prefer to go to such a country where their lives will be at stake. So, it is very important to ensure maximum security for both foreign and local tourists at our spots.

    5. Improving hotel services
If tourists are not satisfied with the services of the hotels then foreign tourists won’t suggest their natives to visit Bangladesh. So, it is very important to improve the service of our hotels to ensure more and more visit by foreigners.

    6. Private sector involvement for promotion of tourism
Employment of multi – dimensional Consultants by Planning Commission to form the Terms of Reference for Private sector
Formation of a Strategy for involvement of Private sector
Formation of strategy for development partners
Monitoring strategy of private sector governance and management

    7. Tourist friendly policies of Immigration and Home Ministry
Improving Immigration & visa systems for tourists, simplifying visa process. Steps should be taken to stop harassment of foreign tourists and non-resident Bangladeshis at local airports.
Introducing visa on arrival. This will encourage more fore tourists to visit our motherland.

    8. Role of Bangladesh Diplomatic missions
Bangladesh Diplomatic Missions abroad can be used as promoter of tourism.
Bangladesh, its demographic position, people, culture, heritage, should be publicized in an attractive way using domestic Marketing Consultants to brand the country to the outside world with a proper theme.
A well branded Bangladesh can be publicized through Electronic Media, Posters magazine, Internet , Online information, and attractive holiday deals.
Diplomatic missions should hold fairs and holiday packages abroad to promote tourism of Bangladesh.
Independent Tourist Cell can be established in specific countries such as UK, USA, Australia from where most of the tourists come as visitors to Bangladesh.

    9. Committees for joint collaboration of Parajatan, Ministry of Home, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Civil Aviation & Tourism, Ministry of Information, Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Ministry of Land, Public Works and LGRD
    Composition of multi-Committees ( short/long term).
Committee for setting up TOR for PPP procedures.
    Committee for Floating tender documents.
Committee for verification of tender documents ( employ Consultants by BPC).
    Committee for awarding tenders.
