August 31, 2011, Bangkok: Preliminary results released by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) today showed that international visitor arrivals into Asia/Pacific destinations1 grew by 6% year-on-year in June 2011.

The positive momentum of the previous months held strong for Southeast Asia, which led the region with 15.5% growth during the month of June. The rebound in arrivals to Thailand (+54%) positively impacted this overall result, strongly supported by the other reporting destinations in this sub-region all of which enjoyed double-digit growth. This in turn was supported by strong travel demand within ASEAN and an increase in arrivals from China.

International arrivals growth to South Asia was a robust 12% in June, boosted by double-digit increases in inbound numbers to Nepal (+38%), the Maldives (+27%) and Sri Lanka (+20%). India maintained the same pace of growth seen in the previous month at 7%. European arrivals are amongst the main contributors to this growth.

Northeast Asia saw an improvement after posting slow growth of 0.6% in May, with a 3.7% increase in arrivals for June 2011. This growth, however, was very unevenly distributed among destinations in the sub-region. Tourism demand to Japan continued to recover, reducing losses in inbound arrivals from -63% in April to -50% in May and -36% in June. Chinese Taipei (-2%) and China (+1%) registered weak results while Hong Kong SAR (+16%), Macau SAR (+15%) and Korea (ROK) (+11%) enjoyed buoyant growth for the month, supported by the key origin market of China.

It should be remembered that even though the percentage growth rate may be relatively weaker than for other sub-regions, the sheer volume of arrivals to Northeast Asia means that 3.7% growth directly translates into more than 600,000 additional arrivals for the month.

International Arrivals to the Pacific recorded an aggregate decline of 4% in June. The main destinations of Australia (-4%) and New Zealand (-10%) showed significant decreases compared to the corresponding period last year. This downturn was caused – in part at least – by the ash cloud disruption to air travel from the Chilean volcano together with the continued effects of the earthquake in Christchurch. Nevertheless, some Pacific Island nations still managed to show positive growth, especially Palau (+63%), Vanuatu (+27%), Tahiti (+19%), Papua New Guinea (+16%), New Caledonia (+11%) and Cook Island (+8%).

January to June 2011
Of the 31 destinations reporting half-year arrivals (January to June 2011), 26 indicted positive growth, with 14 showing double-digit gains. Clear growth leaders over this period were Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand with gains of 37%, 29% and 28% respectively (January to June, year-on-year).

Collectively, these 31 destinations generated growth of 5.3% for the Asia/Pacific region during the first half of 2011. Even with the loss of almost 1.4 million arrivals to Japan, this cluster of destinations collectively not only countered that contraction but managed to add enough additional arrivals to the collective count to post a year-on-year gain of more than eight million international arrivals.

Kris Lim, Director of PATA’s Strategic Intelligence Centre, said: “The first-half year growth of around 5%, given the challenges the industry has faced so far this year underlines the resilience of travel and tourism in the Asia/Pacific region. The comparatively weaker economies of the USA and Europe mean that much of this growth has had to come from intra-regional travel and this in turn has only been possible because of the stronger regional economies and the continued expansion of airline seat capacity within the region.”

Lim added that at the current rate of growth, overall arrivals to the region will push to the 433 million mark by the end of the year, up from 408 million last year. The majority of the Asia/Pacific destinations will once again look at record numbers of arrivals, led by South Asia and Southeast Asia destinations in terms of percentage growth.

“While European arrivals remain key to South Asia’s growth, Southeast Asia will be driven by the rapidly growing China and India outbound markets while Northeast Asia is expected to see strong gains in arrivals from Southeast Asia driven by the steadily growing LCC network,” said Lim.

1)Asia/Pacific is defined as including the following sub-regions for the purposes of press releases:

Northeast Asia = China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Korea (ROK), Macau SAR and Mongolia
Southeast Asia = Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam
South Asia = Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka
The Pacific = Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, Guam, Hawaii, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Northern Marianas, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu

Results are preliminary; estimates are used for missing data. All comparative figures are year-on-year unless otherwise stated.

China: During the first five months of 2011, China welcomed 55.3-million international arrivals, a gain of 1.2% which equates to 637,500 additional international visits. Foreign overnighters increased by 1.6% over this period to reach an inbound volume of 8.54-million.

Thailand: International visitors to Thailand increased 28.1% in the first six months of 2011 to reach close to 9.7-million arrivals. Key growth markets: Saudi Arabia (+84%), China (+68%) and Hong Kong SAR (+59%). Context: a year ago Thailand’s political crisis deterred many visitors. Big growth now reflects the artificially low benchmark of last year.

Australia: There were 386,600 visitor arrivals during May 2011, an increase of 2.7% relative to May 2010. This lifts Australia’s inbound total to close on 2.4% over the first five months of the year, a gain of 1.6%.

India: India welcomed 2.9-million visitor arrivals in the first six months of 2011, a year-on-year growth of 10.9%. Foreign exchange earnings grew 12.1% when measured in local currency and 14.2% when converted to US dollars.

Assist the recovery of post-tsunami tourism

Our aim: The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) set up the Consulting Unit on Biodiversity and Tourism for Tsunami Affected Countries in Bonn, Germany, in October 2006 with funding from the government of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Consulting Unit’s primary mission is to provide expertise and advisory support to the national and local governments of countries that have been struck by tsunamis. The aim of its work is to help these countries re-develop their tourist infrastructure on the basis of biodiversity principles.
In many regions, the deforestation of intact coastal vegetation (particularly mangroves), over-exploitation of coral reefs and loss of sand dunes have weakened and reduced ecosystem safeguards against natural disasters such as tsunamis. Poorly planned tourism development – as manifested in unregulated and inappropriate infrastructure – has been partly responsible for the loss of biological diversity so critical to the people who live and work in coastal regions which also provide destinations for millions of people on holiday. Consequently, respect for nature is increasingly vital to reducing future risks to local populations and foreign and domestic tourists.
Based on this awareness, the UNWTO Consulting Unit promotes a form of tourism development that supports biodiversity conservation, social welfare and economic security in equal measure in host countries and their communities.

The following chapter titles from this publication are: Our Approach, Guiding Principles, Realizing changes (project experience from Thailand and Indonesia) and Outlook.

Special focus should be given to the Guiding principles of the work of the UNWTO Consulting Unit. These inspiring principles are:
• Ensure the broad participation and involvement of stakeholders in the planning and implementation of sustainable tourism development and management.
• Use cross-sectoral co-operation and the exchange of knowledge at all levels to harmonize biodiversity conservation with tourism development.
• Provide target-group-specific workshops and training to boost the area’s institutional and human capacity for effective tourism management.
• Create an enabling environment for tourism planning and biodiversity conservation by coaching and supporting existing structures and personnel in conjunction with the development of tourism management plans for model sites.

Many players in the tourism sector talk about sustainable development, but what are the lessons to be learned from the players in front? Knowledge and inspiration on this subject is provided in the report: ‘Lessons learned – the North Andaman community tourism network’.

Executive abstract of report:

Over the past four years, sustainable tourism along Thailand’s Andaman Coast has been promoted as a development tool by government policy, the private sector, and NGOs. Concurrently, a number of communities have developed tourism activities based on the area’s cultural and natural heritage. With the support of IUCN, the North Andaman Community Tourism Network (N-ACT) is increasing the contribution of tourism to sustainable livelihoods and sound ecosystem management by providing communities with access to the best available knowledge and practices.
This paper will summarize N-ACT’s accomplishments and identify features that may be useful in developing community tourism programs elsewhere. Through monitoring, networking, promotion, and capacity building, N-ACT generates tangible outcomes that address poverty alleviation, gender equity, and the need for knowledge sharing.
Lessons from the first phase of N-ACT relate to four major areas; choosing the right
partners, setting up a successful network, linking conservation and tourism, and
facilitating partnerships.

The report is written by Bodhi Garrett, Coordinator of N-ACT Community Network and founder of North Andaman Tsunami Relief.

Daily Star article by nature lover Anwar A Khan

Last time, when I was in Bangkok for a few days, my friend Mr. Siriraks and his daughter Candy took me to a tree plantation project in Thailand’s Samut Prakarn province and I stayed there for about two days. This was a great experience for me. At the start, I was reluctant to go there but my friend was a very tenacious fellow. Finally, I nodded to his request to pass a good amount of time there. When I reached there, I found the place to be a real greenery which will remain imprinted in my mind for many years to come. I had an amazing time. Thanks to my friend and his daughter so much for giving me the opportunity to experience such a beautiful greenery.
This is a project of planting 2000 trees, giving the opportunity to all volunteer participants to contribute an extra effort by adopting additional trees for this project. Almost 400 volunteer employees, customers, friends and families joined and contributed their time and effort to complete planting of about 5,000 native trees. The aims of this project are to increase awareness, help protect Thailand’s environment and show the people’s dedication to fight global warming by participating in reforesting efforts. The trees planted in this project are of various species. The project office provides environmental education and tackles climate change by restoring natural forests.
The planting site is within the Si Nakorn Khuan Park lying just across the river from central Bangkok in Bang Krachao district of Samut Prakarn. The area is often referred to as the “lungs” of Bangkok due to its wide expanse of greenery. The park is managed by Thailand’s Royal Forestry Department which has joined in numerous tree planting efforts in the past. The project will ensure protection and management of the area for years to come.
You will appreciate that human activities are increasing and so the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. These additional gases are like additional blankets around the earth. They allow the sun’s energy to reach the earth’s surface, but prevent more heat from escaping. This means that the earth is slowly heating up. This enhanced greenhouse effect is causing global warming and changing our climate. Carbon dioxide is the biggest contributor to this enhanced greenhouse effect (about 70%). The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is about 30% higher now than it was 200 years ago. As a result of climate change temperatures could markedly rise by the next 50 years. Sea levels could rise considerably by the end of the century.
Two billion tonnes of carbon are released in the atmosphere each year due to deforestation. Deforestation accounts for 25 percent of all man-made emissions carbon dioxide. Worldwide, deforestation continues at an alarming rate. Most deforestation is for conversion of forests to agricultural land. It is learnt that the rainforests cover only 7 per cent of the land on earth but they contain nearly half of all the trees on earth. They generate about 40 per cent of the world’s oxygen. How important is their conservation!
Trees play very important role in our environment: From absorbing carbon dioxide from atmosphere and helping to combat global warming to soil and water conservation, and providing livelihoods for communities. Forests act as important ‘carbon sinks’. Replanting and protecting forests is an important step in combating climate change. However, grassroots level measures for conservation and education about the environment are an integral part of this Thai project. Afforestation of the waste lands near villages and within residential and common areas of the villages is also undertaken.
The Centre which is looking after the project, is an initiative to preserve the rich ecological heritage of the country. In the past two years measures have been undertaken to conserve the ecology of the nearby areas of the park and at the same time create facilities for the local visitors, thus catering both to man and environment. Cleaning campaigns focusing on removing plastic wastes and educating the visitors on the hazards of toxic wastes being dumped in the outfalls form a part of ongoing efforts to inculcate nature awareness amongst the masses. As an endeavour to preserve and propagate the area’s rich environmental resources, the Centre is also carrying on tree plantation and supports protection and propagation of native wildlife.
To create awareness amongst children about conserving their rich natural heritage, the centre conducts four-day residential Nature Awareness Programmes involving live demonstrations, guest lectures, audio-visual presentations, field trips and a hands-on experience in scientific documentation and photography. In addition, trekking and outings in the wilderness would be an essential component of this programme. Measures against poaching of wildlife, illegal felling of trees, and trade in wildlife products will be initiated at the village level. Schemes for water conservation and rainwater harvesting at individual households and the community as a whole are also implemented.
Nearby the project, there is a canal which is with added natural touch. Along it there are birds, like kingfishers, mornbills, black-headedd ibis, blue crowned parrots, coppersmith barbet, green pecker, black napped oriole, owls, jungle mynas, mangroove pitta, yellow bittern and so on. All these combined together, there is the sweetest chirping music of those birds which my ears have ever been treated to.
There are several resorts in and around the project site. There is also a beautiful walk-in waterfall. This place might not be for everybody, but for those that are seeking peace and tranquillity this might be the right prescription.
What a wonderful job the Thai people have done! And that is believable once it is seen only. If several such projects can be implemented in Bangladesh, I believe we can reduce impact of so many natural calamities that we usually face every year causing us heavy losses.

Grassroots Tourism Project Recognized by BBC World Challenge

Helping a local community to improve a trail through the jungle might not be everyone’s idea of a perfect holiday; but for Dave and Meredith it proved to be fascinating insight into a traditional way of life that is under threat from the rapid pace of tourism development in Southern Thailand. As part of their holiday, the couple visited a homestay in Ban Talae Nok, and jumped at the chance to help the villagers clear the local nature trail and make it safe for future tourists.

“We are passionate about this type of tourism because it benefits both parties,” explained Meredith. “For us, it enriched our lives and informed our sense of the world. The villagers have become stewards of their own experience; making decisions about how to introduce tourism into their lives, rather than having Western tourism forced upon them.”

Founded in the wake of the 2004 tsunami, Andaman Discoveries has grown from providing emergency disaster relief into an internationally acclaimed community-based tour operator. Over the past five years the social enterprise has helped tsunami-affected communities achieve environmental, cultural and financial sustainability through conservation programs, vocational training and providing interactive cultural tours for responsible tourists.
Andaman Discoveries now supports eight villages to achieve sustainable development on their own terms. Through homestays, handicrafts production and guiding, it creates supplementary livelihood opportunities for the communities, that provide much-needed additional income in a way that complements the villagers’ traditional way of life.

Noi, a member of a Moken (nomadic sea-faring people) community that recently started opening its homes to tourists, says that, “since being involved with Andaman Discoveries, my life has been better. No one cared about us before; but now people are interested in our traditional way of life. I feel proud and excited when we have guests. They teach our children the importance of preserving our culture and the environment.”

Andaman Discoveries has been nominated as a finalist in the BBC World Challenge 2009, in recognition of its contribution to community development in Southern Thailand. The World Challenge is a global competition hosted by BBC World News and Newsweek magazine, in association with Shell. The 12 finalists for this year’s competition were selected from more than 900 nominations on the basis of their innovation at grassroots level in “countering socio-economic and environmental issues”.

Tui Chomphusri, Director of Andaman Discoveries, observed that, “the BBC World Challenge is a chance for us to share with people the difference we are making. Whether it’s providing income to women’s handicraft groups or training the next generation of conservationists, community-based tourism allows visitors to enjoy the traditional Thai way of life, whilst helping to preserve the unique culture of our region.”

Bangkok-based travel agent Khiri Travel is seeking to raise awareness of the disposable plastic bag problem in Thailand and Indochina. As a practical first step, the company has purchased 1,000 machine washable cotton bags for distribution to tourism partners, villagers and staff in destinations it visits.

The 1,000 ‘Earth Bags’ were manufactured by the Special People Foundation (SPF) at Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. The SPF provides meaningful work to Thai people with disabilities. Each bag has a unique design and all are painted individually by physically impaired artists, most of them children from Chiang Mai.

“There are two issues Khiri Travel wants to address,” said Frans Betgem, the company’s co-founder. “First, the unnecessary and unsightly problem of plastic bags. They take hundreds of years to decompose. They kill river and sea life and they spoil the aesthetic appeal of parks, villages, city streets and canals – many of them tourist attractions. Second, there are 1.2 million people with disabilities in Thailand alone. Giving them viable work at SPF helps their daily survival and their self esteem.”

Experts estimate that 500 billion to one trillion plastic bags are consumed and discarded annually worldwide – more than a million per minute. Even in developed countries with more advanced recycling facilities, less than three percent of plastic bags are recycled. Plastic bags are typically made of polyethylene. They can take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade in landfills that emit harmful greenhouse gases. In the process they separate into smaller and smaller toxic particles that contaminate soil and water.

Mass tourism has been entrenched in Thailand for more than three decades. With over 10 million visitors a year, their presence in the country has taken its toll on the environment in a number of ways, particularly in and near the country’s national parks, offshore islands and fragile coral reef systems. Air and water pollution, improper trash disposal, and lack of proper sewage treatment facilities have all taken their toll, not to mention the social impact on the country’s minority population.

Workers involved in the tourism industry are increasingly voicing their concerns about the situation to prevent further damage to the environment.

However, the increasingly competitive market has meant that profit margins have shrunk, in particular the crowded hotel industry centers of Bangkok and Phuket. Room rates in these locations are much lower than

Socio-culturally
The Thai tourism industry has expanded to all corners of the kingdom, encompassing tropical islands, jungles, and urban centers. The most fragile part of the country is the north, where ethnic minorities have become an attraction for trekkers. Much damage has been done not only to their culture and to the surrounding environment where trees have been felled to feed the demand for construction materials.
